VISION

The aim of the province of Siquijor is to become an ecotourism destination in the Philippines with an improved quality of life and its cultural and historical heritage preserved and enhanced.

The main assets of Siquijor's tourism are the moderate pace of life on the island, friendliness and the genuine hospitality of its population and the prevailing security and peacefulness. This way of life, which is also enjoyed by many visitors, enhances the natural attractions and beauty of the Island. It also provides the special touch that makes Siquijor unique.

The natural attractions such as long sandy beaches, hidden coves, the coral reefs, the aquatic flora and fauna, the hillsides with their waterfalls, caves and rare old trees and forests should be preserved to enhance the sustainability of tourism development.

The same holds for characteristic buildings that highlight the history of the Island and serve the local population as a reference to their cultural heritage and familiarize the visitors with the island's past.

Special attention should also be given to the culture of the islands' population, manifested in many fiestas and the traditional faith healing, which is a unique trait of Siquijor.

Tourism should not disrupt or replace these assets, but rather use them as an underlying base in which the different cultural values brought in by visitors from their homes can be blended in.

ECOTOURISM

Ecotourism as a new market niche in tourism was first mentioned in the late 70s and early 80s. Until today there is a lack of clarity in the operational definition of ecotourism. Often it is associated with any type of nature or wildlife experience. But the concept of ecotourism includes much more than mere nature experience.

Mainly it includes the following characteristics:
  • Contribution to conservation of biodiversity
  • Sustaining the culture and well being of the local people
  • Awareness raising and environmental education for both the travelers and local communities
  • Responsible, conscientious action on the part of the tourist
  • Lowest possible consumption of non-renewable resources
  • Delivered to small groups by small-scale businesses
  • Stresses ownership and participation in decision-making of the local community
