Business/trade development in the province has that distinctive characteristic of being dominated by small and micro-traders which form the backbone of commercial activities. However, the services sector is fast catching up and so do the manufacturing sector. Handicrafts, furniture making, food processing and ceramics are steadily gaining prominence as the prevailing industry and alternative livelihood.
The retail trade sector has maintained its leadership over the services and manufacturing sectors in terms of number of establishments. Fully entrenched in its position of leadership, the retail trade sector single-handedly provided most of investments and employment for workers in the province, aside from those in agriculture. The major economic activity of the province since then and now is basically the same, setting on an agricultural production area. The major occupation of the people are farming, fishing and trading. Industrial activities are very minute and basic such as lime, mining, woodcraft, small metal workshops, rice and corn milling and others. The table below shows economic indicators:
